Instrument Flight Rating (IFR)
An Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) rating allows pilots to fly in conditions with reduced visibility by relying on aircraft instruments. To obtain this rating, pilots must meet several requirements. The training involves completing ground instruction on IFR topics and passing an FAA knowledge test. Pilots must also accumulate significant flight experience, including 50 hours of cross-country time as pilot-in-command and 40 hours of instrument time. This includes 15 hours of instrument flight training and a long cross-country flight under IFR. Additionally, they must demonstrate proficiency in various instrument flying tasks and pass a practical test consisting of an oral examination and flight test.
